A well-functioning irrigation system is often the difference between a beautiful landscape and a dried-up dreary one. As a commercial property owner, there are certain steps you have to take on a regular basis to ensure your irrigation system continues to function properly. The following are a few steps to get you started.
Assess the Sprinkler Heads and Spouts
One of the best places to start is with your sprinkler heads and spouts. Check to see if any of them are broken, even if there’s just a little chip off the side. Pay attention to the nozzle where the water actually comes out. Is it clogged? If you have pop-ups, do they pop up when the water is turned on? Have any of them stayed up and gotten mowed over? There are a lot of issues to consider in regards to your sprinkler heads and spouts, so a thorough assessment is necessary.
Check for Leaks
No matter how hard you try to prevent them, leaks happen. Whether it’s due to age or damage suffered from something such as overgrown tree roots, your irrigation system could be leaking somewhere. Look for damp, sunken areas in your lawn or places where the grass grows more abundantly than others. Those are areas where a broken pipe might be lurking beneath. If you notice these signs, contact your landscaper to have it inspected as soon as possible.
Inspect the Water Pressure
You need your irrigation system to have the right water pressure in order to be efficient. With pressure that’s too high, the sprinklers will spray beyond the intended area, leaving a dry spot underneath. With pressure that’s too low, they won’t reach the intended area. Water pressure issues can be difficult to solve, so they are best left to an irrigation specialist.
